Surrendering Your Dog

We know that surrendering your pet is a difficult decision to make. We understand that sometimes there are just no other options for pet owners.  However, before surrendering, be sure to consider the reasons you’re doing so. You may have options!

Behavior

If your pet is having behavior issues, have you talked to your veterinarian? It is surprising how often there is an underlying medical issue causing unwanted behavior. A bladder infection could be causing unwanted accidents, an ear infection might be causing your dog pain, and they are more snippy because of it. You never know!

Moving

Are you struggling to find a place to live that accepts pets? Or facing breed discrimination? Unfortunately, in our area, it is very difficult to find a pet-friendly landlord, let alone a place to rent.

The Nebraska Humane Society in Omaha has some great information on finding rentals.

If you are moving out of the area, please look at the following links. They may have something to help you with your move.

Medical or
Homeless

If you are considering surrendering due to a short/long term medical stay, it’s worth looking into resources for boarding, or pet sitting instead of rehoming your pet. If you are facing homelessness, talk to a family member or friend to see if they can help you with your pet while you get back on your feet. If you are a veteran, we encourage you to contact the VA.

Rehoming

If you are trying to rehome the dog on Facebook marketplace or other online markets, please consider asking for a rehoming fee. This will help ensure that your dog will hopefully go to a good home. Another option is to visit Adoptapet’s owner surrender website.

Please reach out to us, and we can help network your dogs as well before you have to surrender.

Surrender

Currently, we are only accepting surrenders on a case-by-case basis. If you want to surrender, please call us first, as our board must approve all surrenders of directors.

We do charge surrender fees to offset the cost of vet care.

Intact dogs are $90, and spayed and neutered dogs are $45.
